SUE LANGE REPORTS BACK FROM THE RELEASE ME PARTY

December 2nd, 1999, New York City. This was the place to be if
you're an Indiegrrl (i.e. artist or fan). The end of the year "Release
Me" party held at ACME Underground in the City was wildly
successful and to quote somebody, somewhere, "There was a lot
of love in the room."
The party was held to celebrate local Indiegrrl CDs that were
released in 1999. Five Indiegrrl bands played and several more
were spun in between the bands by Indie djs James and Abby
from the band Jabber.
First up was Crabby Lady, fronted by Sue Lange, organizer for the
event. Groove rock with high energy is their bag. As usual Ms.
Lange let the cat out.
Susan MacLean, who everybody thought was a sweet little thing,
surprised us with her no-nonsense band that managed to walk the
line between "sweet" and "rock the house." We couldn't help but
love her.
After Ms. MacLean, familiar to NYC Indiegrrls, was the talented
Elisa Peimer. With a perfectly designed set (as always), Ms.
Peimer took us through her pop-rock paces ending on a fabulous
bluesy/rock number containing that elusive familiar yet fresh quality
only hit songs are capable of delivering. Why is this child not on
tour with the big guys?
Slushpuppy tore the house down. And then built it back up. Dawn
Botti led her crew through the ecstasy and pain that only a solid
rock band can serve up. Viva la femme!
Why go on after slushpuppy? I wouldn't want to, but Marina Vittoria
did. Again a surprise. We all thought she was very sweet.
Complaining of having stage fright, she appeared to be prepared to
allow us to slink out after the exhaustion of Dawn Botti's
performance. Sorry friends, uh uh! Not on this girl's beat. Her band,
consisting of seasoned performers, was tight, right, and full of bite.
Doing a popular cover in her own truly cool way got us all singing,
just like an end of the night number is supposed to do. Well done,
my fine young Philly filly.
Jackie Sarno was there from discjockey.com doing interviews.
EZCD.com taped us for netcast. The show will be archived.
(http://www.ezcd.com/cybercasts/ but note that only a few of us
were able to get the program to work)
Dominique Giselle organized the merch table. She set up cute little
easels for all the CDs. There had to be at least 20 sitting up on the
table. It looked like Impressionist-fest or something. Abby and
James did great with the spinning, announcing band names in
between the sets and posting the name of the band under a "Now
Playing" sign. Stefanie fix was there. Karen Rush played emcee,
announcing the celebrities in attendance (Jon Sobel and
Halley DeVestern) and raffle ticket winners ... Allison Tartaglia and
Christine of Acts Magdalena were seen helping out at the merch
table and (helping themselves to the food table right next door).
At the food table, people started eating the cake before the candles
were lit. ... pretty good cake. Halley brought hummous, Susan
MacLean brought healthy food. (& presumably tasty too - ed.)
The banner was fab, it brought tears to our eyes and lots of good
comments. It is big and very handsome I must say. Having purple
and yellow as our colors makes for a very visible logo.

3) NEW CD RELEASES FROM INDIVIDUAL INDIEGRRL ARTISTS

Vivian Slade will be releasing a live CD early next year (February?)
from a gig she did in Nashville with her band. bass, kit, percussion,
cello and Vivian on acoustic and electric. Despite recording it in
Nashville, her plan is to have a release party in Memphis.

Amber Gaia hopes to start recording her first CD in January.

Liana pulled off a successful CD release party, even though the
manufacturer was not co-operative. She did have a short run of her
new CD available however. Also, even though cash was stolen from
her cash box, she managed to feel very positive about the evening.
http://www.indiecanada.com/liana/

The Julia Set is finishing a sequel to its "The Irreplaceable Luxury
of Risk" EP. The band has nine songs "in the can" and plans to
record two or three more. They anticipate a late January/Early
february release of the album, tentatively titled "Toiling in
Anonymity". The Julia Set is also actively gigging, complete with a
showcase performance at the Philadelphia Music Conference on
January 21st, 2000.
http://listen.to/thejuliaset

Misty River's debut CD, "Misty River: Rising" will be released in
Spring 2000. Their music is self-described as Americana Music
and features guitars, fiddle, banjo, accordion, and bass as well as
the harmonic voices of these four ladies.
http://www.mistyriverband.com

Indiegrrl Compilation II is now in production. The Release date is
March 15, 2000 - including audio and MP3 tracks by some of the
best grrl talent around. All proceeds going toward MRPP (men
working together to prevent rape)

4) ARTIST NEWS

Indiegrrls Patti Witten and Mary Sue Twohey are both featured at
Taylor Guitar's website, on their "Artists Who Play - Discover The
Indies" pages. The artist's profiles are permanently archived at the
site, and several are added each month. Patti and Mary Sue, who
first met last year at the NE Regional Folk Alliance Conference,
were added to the site in November 1999.
Mary Sue just joined Indiegrrl in November, and Patti is a charter
member. Patti and Mary Sue attended NERFA again this year
(Nov. 12-14, 1999), along with more than a dozen other Indiegrrls.
http://www.taylorguitars.com/indies.html

Patti Witten also reports that 3 of her songs had been finalists in
the Great American Song Contest. If you go to
http://www.songpro.com/page33.html you will see her song
"Change of Heart Church Choir" right at the top of the page. It was
chosen as the Grand Prize Winner.
http://pattiwitten.com

Sue Willett's song "Night Time Company" was used on "Buffy the
Vampire Slayer" November 30th. Sue is also featured online at
Silicon Salley. Go to:
http://siliconsalley.com/issue4/news/index.html
and then click on "Content"

Kelly's Lot once again will have hosted the second monthly Video
Music Party at The Gig West in LA. Dec 15. This is a contest that
benefits Stop Cancer...The Next Generation. Indiegrrl's Simon
Stinger have a CD in the running. There will be another one in Jan
and Feb with finals in March. Besides the videos Kelly's Lot will be
playing live and Peter Tork of Monkees fame, who is also one of
the judges, will be joining Kelly's Lot on stage for a blues jam after
the contest.
Also listen for Simon Stinger's "Fringe Authority" the Miramax film
"Diamonds" starring Dan Ackroyd, Kirk Douglas, Lauran Bacall
and Jenny MacArthy.

The online formation of an organization to look out for the interests
of independent artists might not seem like news these days, but
when Indiegrrls Jon Sobel (The Halley DeVestern Band) and
Dominique Gizelle are the principals, you know something is
shaking. The Society of Independent Musical Artists (SIMA) was
formed to address concerns that the web is about to give away the
store, without compensation to the artists who are filling the store
shelves. A website will soon be up at indiegrrl.com with more
details.

***************************************
5) FUN STUFF... ('cause you "The FAN" just NEED to know)

A friend of Patti Witten reports that Joni Mitchell held Patti's CD in
her hands. He went to the opening of a show of her paintings at
LACE in Hollywood, walked right up to her, told Joni Mitchell how
much he admired her and handed her Patti's CD, fresh
out of the player in his car.

When DJ Aaron Childs (a fellow Indiegrrl) was interviewed by
Kenny Love about Indie Music and playing it on a commercial radio
station, he was asked what group he foresaw as becoming a 'big-
time' artist. Now he won't say until the article is released, but he
did say, "My answer might surprise you... And yes, it was an
Indiegrrl artist. How's that for a teaser?!? )". When we find that
article, we'll let you in on Aaron's big secret. BUT in the meantime
here's Aaron's list of favorites (You'll have to guess which amongst
them is his pick)

6a) PRINT, and 'ZINE WATCH

Bari Koral here from NYC got a nice feature in Billboard the 3rd
week in November (pg 18). It talks about her "hard hustle"
as an indie artist and how her hard work is starting to pay off.

Indie-Music continues to support Indiegrrl artists with more rave
review. This one for Neon Venus

Playlist and commentary from Writer's Block, 11/17/99, WDVX,
89.9 fm, Clinton, TN - dedicated to the independent performing
songwriter, and hosted by "sweet-T Records" recording artist,
Karen E. Reynolds www.Spiritwall.com
Antje - Big Open Sky
Antje's Big open sky isn't very big...in fact, its refreshingly grass
roots. A truly acoustic feeling CD chock full of beautifully simple
melodies and some fine guitar work. I found myself drawn to cut #
13...Little Ways to Go....the only thing I didn't like about it, was
that its a relatively short song...and I found myself wanting to hear
more.
Jennifer Knapp - Kansas
http://www.JenniferKnapp.com
If you haven't heard this next artist....you've been missing out.
Jennifer Knapp is destined to become a household name, and is
well on her way to being just exactly that. Her immediate acclaim
came from the Contemporary Christian market, but, this young
lady's music is crossing borders all over the place. With strong
lyrics, powerful vocals, and moving arrangements, the only
category you can place her in is that of "GOOD MUSIC". I couldn't
decide on one cut...I love the entire CD....so, I decided to play
2...cut#1 Faithful prelude & cut#2, Whole Again.
Kym Tuvim - Kym Tuvim
http://www.CakeRecords.com
this record is as strong as the voice of the girl singing on it. Kym
Tuvim is a name to remember...fine songs, interesting
arrangements...all brought to you by way of her powerful voice.
cut# 10...Every Color

Mary Gauthier - Drag Queen's & Limousines

I knew that, when we first played Mary Gauthier a couple of weeks
ago, we would have requests for more....I was right. And that
renews my belief that good music always wins out over
commercialism. A writer's writer, Mary Gauthier is someone we're
going to hear a lot of. cut #10, Jackie's Train.

7) Some Changes for the Indiegrrl Fans Newsletter.

Have you ever taken you 52-card deck and thrown them up in the
air? That's a bit like asking me to coordinate Indiegrrl Fans from the
humble email you are reading, to an actual website magazine. If
you've ever visited my band website you'll have a clue what I mean.
You see, when I started Indiegrrl Fans, I had no idea what an editor
does. Trial by fire. So hold on there are changes coming and
they're all good. But if you know any web wranglers who'd like to
help PLEASE send them to me.

**************************************************

8) Indiegrrl Fans mast-head contest

The votes are in and the official mast-head is

INDIEGRRL - BREAKING THE SOUND BARRIER
Indiegrrl Fans - riding the waves
With a grand total of 6 votes.

Indiegrrl Fans - dancing in the fallout - 5 votes
Indiegrrl Fans - catching the (sound) waves - 1 vote
Indiegrrl Fans - witnessing herstory - 1 vote
Indiegrrl Fans - sounding the alarm - 2 votes
Indiegrrl Fans - Always Tuned In - 1 vote (submitted after contest
was started)

Patty Keough was the winner, because she submitted the winning
entry. She should have received her copy of the compilation, by the
time you read this. Actually, the joke is that she submitted 4 out of
the 6 entries that were selected. I hadn't intended to make it so
one sided, but I ran the contest with what you all sent in.

It was fun reading some of the comments. I confess that my
original idea "Leaning towards the Light" is a little bit too Gloria
Estefan as one voter suggested. I guess that's why I knew
someone else could do better. (I wonder if she needs a new
songwriter?)

************************************************************
9) WOULD YOU LIKE A CD WITH THIS NEWSLETTER?

This is a survey. We're toying with the idea of throwing together a
print newsletter complete with CD sampler. If we are to seriously
consider this, it would take at least 3 or 4 months to get a running
start, and I'd need at least 50 people who'd be willing to pay for it.
(As if I actually had the time to do this.) My idea, for now, is to
create a quarterly print zine - cleverly disguised as the CD booklet,
in broadside fashion.
Here's the real trick. I need to know how many readers would be
willing to pay for it, and how much you'd pay.
Would it be worth $10?, $9, $8?, $7?, $6?

Unlike the Indiegrrl compilation series, these would be an
extremely limited run collector series.

10b) YOUR TURN

Here's the part where I tell you what you can do to help. First, a
reminder ... "FAN" is short for fanatic.
So you have my permission to tell everyone you know how great
the music is here. Let loose. Buy compilation CDs or CDs from
individual artists. Play them for friends. And also email me with
your ideas to spice up next month's issue.

That's it. Pretty simple, pretty cool, but guess what?

Derek over at CDBaby has set up a "friends" program so that you
can make $1 per CD sold, just by web-linking to the IndieGrrl
gallery! You will need to have a website to do this.
More info here...

FINAL COMMENTS - Re: Controversy and VRRadio

There's no question that the host of VR Radio, Michael Anthony, is
a shock jock. Because he publishes a list that includes Indiegrrl
artists, I have included his list here. It is not my intention of starting
a debate about exploitation or first amendment issues. There's a
good chance that I've heard most of the arguments at one time or
another. My mission as editor of Indiegrrl Fans is actually pretty
clear. If it serves to entertain fans, while also serving the goals of
Indiegrrl artists, then it is appropriate.
That's where my dilemma lies. I have no problem with the idea of
dropping mention of VR Radio from future issues. On the other
hand, while his site may well be offensive, is that enough for me to
ignore his show. I can think of a number of artists who have thrived
while being quite offensive. If this is an area that concerns you, visit
his site, and then tell me simply whether you'd like me to continue
showing his lists, or not.
Just to make myself clear ... I AM asking for your opinion about
whether VR Radio is appropriate for Indiegrrl Fans list. But, I'd just
like short responses. Just don't expect me to debate you on it.

Rich (the editor)
See you all on the flip side of Y2K
